Game Math Foundations: Affine Space

September 23, 2019Updated Feb 17, 2026

Affine Space — a geometric term derived from the 16th-century French word "afin" and the Latin "affinis" (related).

An Affine Space is a geometric space where vectors exist without a fixed origin. Unlike a standard coordinate system that has an origin, an Affine Space has no anchored reference point.

This distinction is foundational for understanding coordinate systems and transformations in game development.
