MagSafe vs. USB-C Charging - A Year-Long Misunderstanding

I assumed the MacBook could only charge via MagSafe since it came bundled with one, but I tried plugging in USB-C and it charges too??

The MacBook has multiple USB-C ports — so why does a dedicated charging port even exist? I spent a whole year not knowing this...
