Communication and Understanding - A Team Conflict Lesson

May 21, 2023Updated Feb 17, 2026

Recently, I had a conflict with my team members.

The root cause was poor communication.

After a suffocating 4-hour exchange of gaslighting-style remarks like "Why didn't you say that from the beginning?" and "You should have understood on your own," I left work early and went home exhausted.

While calming myself down with a cup of coffee,

a thought suddenly occurred to me.

"Is what I said absolutely right, and what my colleague said absolutely wrong?"

Of course, my colleague must have had things to say based on their own experience and standards.

In the end, I had failed to acknowledge my colleague's perspective.

So I sat down with my team members again and said:

"I was too sensitive and wasn't even trying to acknowledge your opinions — I was just hearing them. I'm sorry.

From now on, let's acknowledge each other and make sure we communicate the intent behind our opinions well."

After that, beyond just communication with team members,

I've been transforming from someone whose mood was ruined by a single word

into someone whose mood isn't ruined by a few words.

Or maybe my heart is just becoming more at ease as I get richer..?
